Online sports betting in Florida has become a much-talked-about topic once again in the Sunshine State. As of right now, there are no regulated sportsbooks in Florida, either online or physical locations. But, that does not mean there isn’t movement on the Florida sports betting legislative front that you should know about!
Florida Sports Betting
So, you may be wondering about the status of sports betting and online sports betting in Florida at this time. As mentioned before, there are no regulated sportsbooks or online sportsbooks in operation in the state of Florida, although DFS in Florida is a slightly different story.
State Senator Jeff Brandes has announced his intentions to introduce three bills that would legalize sports betting in Florida. There would be a licensing fee of $100,000 included in the bill as well as a 15% tax rate. The state Senator has introduced very similar legislation in the state of Florida last year.
The Legislative Session for the state of Florida opens on March 2nd, 2021. It will run until March 30th, 2021, with the possibility to extend or have a special session. SB 392 would allow residents of Florida who are 21 years of age or older to place bets on the majority of professional sporting events.
Through this legislation, the Florida Lottery would be in charge of running and regulating the sports betting industry for Florida. SB 394 would set the tax rate for sports betting if SB 392 were to pass. Meanwhile, SB 396 would outline the licensing fees that operators would need to pay in order to receive a license to operate in the state.
However, without tribal support from the Florida Seminole tribe, the bills have a hard battle in front of them. So, as of right now, online sports betting in Florida is the best avenue for those looking to place sports wagers.
